By IRNA,
Berlin : Thousands of people took to the streets of Hamburg and Berlin on Friday to protest Israel’s deadly attack on a fleet of boats trying to bring aid to the Gaza Strip.
The largest demonstration took place in Hamburg where more than 2,500 people voiced their outrage over the brutal Israeli military action, branding it “open sea piracy.”
Protesters called also for the release of the remaining activists of the ‘Gaza Freedom Flotilla’ who were kidnapped by Israeli soldiers following their takeover of the six ships in international waters.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people, mostly Arabs and Turks, rallied in downtown Berlin, urging the German government to halt its support for the Zionist regime.
Germany has witnessed numerous anti-Israel demonstrations across the country since the Zionist state’s assault on the Gaza aid convoy early Monday.
More mass protests against the Zionist state are scheduled in Germany for the weekend….

A grand unified theory of AI?

A new approach unites two prevailing but often opposed strains in the history of artificial-intelligence research.

…statistical patterns that computers can learn from large sets of training data. The probabilistic approach has been responsible for most of the recent progress in artificial intelligence, such as voice recognition systems, or the system that recommends movies to Netflix subscribers. But Noah Goodman, an MIT research scientist whose department is Brain and Cognitive Sciences but whose lab is Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, thinks that AI gave up too much when it gave up rules. By combining the old rule-based systems with insights from the new probabilistic systems, Goodman has found a way to model thought that could have broad implications for both AI and cognitive science.Early AI researchers saw thinking as logical inference: if you know that birds can fly and are told that the waxwing is a bird, you can infer that waxwings can fly. One of…

I Colossus

How Long Till Human-Level AI?

When will human-level AIs finally arrive?

…chance of some AGI milestones being achieved within a few decades.
The range of best-guess time estimates for the AGI milestones without massive additional funding is summarized below:
We were somewhat surprised by the ordering of the milestones in these results. There was consensus that the superhuman milestone would be achieved either last or at the same time as other milestones. However, there was significant divergence regarding the order of the other three milestones. One expert argued that the Nobel milestone would be easier than the Turing Test milestone precisely because it is more sophisticated: to pass the Turing test, an AI must skillfully hide such mental superiorities. Another argued that a Turing test-passing AI needs the same types of intelligence as a Nobel AI but additionally needs to fake a lot of human idiosyncrasies (irrationality, imperfection, emotions). Finally, one expert noted that the third grade AI might come first because passing a third grade exam might be achieved by advances in…

Robots Get Smarter and Younger

You have to watch where you’re walking at the artificial intelligence conference in Boston, you might trip over a roaming robot or bump into one flying around the room. AI is 50 this summer but that won’t stop bots from driving across the desert like a 20-year-old hot rod.

…it was also a chance for AI’s best minds to discuss the field’s future. At one discussion, Tom Mitchell, chair of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, wagered a lobster dinner concerning the fate of AI in 10 years. “By 2016, we will have an AI program that can read 80 percent of the factual content on the web,” Mitchell wagered. If that’s achieved, it would dramatically change the face of AI, he said, creating a never-ending language-learning system fueled by the web. By extracting more and more knowledge from the web, it would read better every day, forever improving itself, he said. Several AI researchers have already taken Mitchell up on his bet. “Either I’m going to get a lot of free dinners, or I’ll have to buy a lobster farm,” he said. Predictions aplenty The predictive capabilities of AI also have experts at the conference foaming at the mouth with possibilities. By mining vast amounts of data about what happened in the past, AI can try to determine what’s going to happen in…
