Advances in genetic engineering and AI are going to change what it means to be human, and that means lots and lots of work for the future’s lawyers.
…There are already laws on the books that take into consideration most of the stuff discussed. Our legal system is flexible enough to get fairly timely rulings on new issues once they come up. For instance, in California in recent years there have been a series of rulings regarding same sex parents.
1. A lesbian couple had each been inseminated by sperm from the same donor. They gave birth to three children between the two women, gave the kids hyphenated names, and raised them together. The couple had not entered into any kind of legal arrangement regarding their partnership. They were not married and had not entered into a domestic partnership. One of the women had given birth to two children, one was disabled. She was the “stay at home” mom. The other lady had one healthy child and was the working parent.
